BGV D26 Abrasive Blasting Work (extracts)

This BG-provision is authoritative for abrasive blasting work and has been known as VBG.

Each company and each party insured has completely to comply with the BGV 26 as amended.

In the following you find some extracts of this provision.

1. Scope
Abrasive blasting of surfaces by using granular abrasives that can be accelerated by compressed air or manually.

2. Definition of terms
The definition of terms like abrasive blasting, abrasives, blasting units, blasting machines, etc.

3. General provisions
The entrepreneur has to take care that
- abrasives
- blasting halls
- suction devices
comply with this provision.

4. Blasting halls
Any dust depositions have to be avoided in blasting halls.
It must be possible to supervise any person working in blasting halls from the outside. The blasting halls must be equipped with suction facilities (filter plants).

5. Dealing with hazardous sources
See BGV B1

6. Jet blasting
If there is no visual contact permanent communication must be able.
In particular cases (toxic substances, etc.) facilities for the cleaning of sticking blasting dust have to be provided for when leaving the hall, as well as separate dressing rooms for outdoor dresses and protective clothing have to be made available as well.

7. Maximum contents of hazardous substances in abrasives

8. Risk of fire and explosion

9. Employment restrictions
Young persons are not allowed to carry out any jet blasting work
Exceptions see BGV D26

10. Operational instructions
The entrepreneur has to prepare an operational instruction for abrasive blasting work to be carried out.

11. Personal protective equipment
has to be provided according to BGV D26.

12. Restrictions of application for abrasives

- personal protective equipment
- respiratory protection masks
- follow-up device filter plant
- switching off blasting pot when entering the blasting hall
- observation window, door end switch, remote control, emergency shut-down, etc.

14. Leaving the blasting hall before commissioning
No people inside the blasting room at commissioning

15. Jet blasting
Remote control, emergency shut-down,
communication facilities
people – emergency signal unit, etc.

16. Hygienic protective measures
Providing sanitary equipment

17. Abrasive blasting of different metals
Metals, e.g. light metals and iron-containing parts must not be treated in the same blasting hall (danger of explosion)

18. Blasting of magnesium alloys
Restrictions for magnesium alloys

19. Cleaning
Safe, regular cleaning of dust depositions also in case of explosive dust/air-mixtures

20. Maintenance
Extensive cleaning work before performing maintenance work, also because of the risk of fire and explosion.
Assembly of couplings at blasting hoses (bonding in) according to the assembly instruction.

21. Checks
Compressed-air blasting units have to be checked by experts:
- before commissioning
- after interruption of operation
- after relocation
- after any maintenance work or changes
Checks according to the provision of pressure pots remain unaffected by this.
All checks have to be demonstrated in test certificates.

22. Infringements of law

23. Interim and execution provisions
